Current Edition

The 2025 Annual Conference of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI) will focus on the theme "Protecting Human Rights from the Global Spread of Organized Crime". As organized crime continues to pose a growing threat to human rights, the Conference will explore how criminal networks undermine legal systems, exploit vulnerable populations, and exacerbate social inequalities.

Bringing together experts from diverse fields, the conference aims to discuss collaborative strategies to safeguard human rights and strengthen democratic institutions in the face of these challenges. This special edition, held for the first time in Latin America and commemorating AHRI's 25th anniversary, provides a crucial space for dialogue and innovation in human rights protection.

The conference will have four main tracks, each addressing different aspects of organised crime and its impact on human rights. Participants are invited to submit papers or panel proposals within the following thematic areas:

Track A: Global perspective on organized crime

  • This Track will examine the diverse manifestations of organized crime across regions, emphasizing its social, political, and economic impacts, alongside global and regional variations in strategies to combat this threat.

Track B: Legal frameworks and institutional responses to organized crime

  • This Track will examine the evolution of legal frameworks and institutional mechanisms designed to counter organized crime, encompassing both national and international initiatives aimed at safeguarding human rights and preserving democratic institutions amid these challenges.

Track C: Remarkable actions in tackling organized crime; best practices and prospects for improvement

  • This Track will develop innovative programmes and community-led actions that have successfully tackled organised crime, focusing on best practices and lessons learned to improve the protection of human rights.

Track D: Human rights in perspective; a review of the past 25 years challenges, and those to come in the years ahead.

  • In commemoration of AHRI's 25th anniversary, this theme will reflect on the progress made in human rights over the past two decades and explore emerging challenges—such as organized crime—that will shape the future of human rights protection.
